When to start preparing for group discussions?

I am in my second semester of engineering. I have been told by many seniors that group discussions form a very important part of getting a job . They have told me that it requires elaborate preparation and so we should start preparing for it from a very early stage. Please can you tell me that when we should start preparing for the group discussion stage and what all to prepare for this?

    Hello friend,

Yes, you seniors are very right that GD has a great part in any job selection so first thing that if you are thinking to start then its very good. Friend GD is a very important thing and you can have a good command on it only if you are regular in it or in its practice so if you are thinking to have a great command then start as soon as possible , the more you spend time in GD the more you will have a good command in it. GD shows your confidence and the guts to start and speak in front of people so choose a small topic and start with that.

    thanks.

Group Discussion is a process where you put your opinion about the particular topic/subject in front of a group and try to convince the group that you

    are correct.

For this the most important thing is that you should have knowledge of the subject.

For that you must have to be a reader as subjects/topics can be of wide range as you don't know what can be asked so the last minute preparations

won't help you, you should read over a period of time.

This will also increase your vocabulary, if it is possible than try to learn important data's .

You should read magazines with good contents most importantly the articles as they are good source of knowledge.

Try to read on topics that are based on current happenings and also on generally important topics like kashmir issue, recent economic slowdown and such

    other important topics.

You should be work on your communication skills.

For it you can make a friend group and can decide a weekly topic on which you will discuss on a particular day, by this you will come to know your weak

points and accordingly you can work on it.

Important things in a GD are:

    Good English.

    Proper pronunciations.

    Facial expressions.

Your knowledge base behind any point you raise.

    Your listening capabilities.

The way you speak: clear and specific

    No unnecessary talks/points

    Hello Aspirant,

Heartily congratulations for getting admission in B.Tech & studying well.

As group discussion is a platform to express your views in presence of your cadres & a examiner, you should have practice to express your views before others. It is required to have control over spoken English,English grammar, word power & technical knowledge.

Also you should be aware of the current affairs such as for sports, politics & development in science etc.It all depends upon your present level of knowledge & expressing power to prepare good for group Discussion. If you up to the mark,It would require very little time to prepare for the same.

If you are weak in English,It may require more time to prepare for the same.To my mind concentrate from now on wards to have discussion with your friends & pay more attention from the vth semester so that you could get an opportunity to face the group discussion/interviews in the 6th to 8th semesters.

    Hope for your positive result.

    Good luck.

Re: When to start preparing for group discussions?

    Hi,

There is no time specified for starting the preparation of Group Discussion...Now a days Group discussion is very common for job interview...
It is also not correct that for every job, group discussion is essential... actually it varies company to company and job to job...
But you should be prepared for the group discussion at an early stage ie. before starting for the job interview...

This is because of the following reason:
[1] group discussion will improve your confidence in speaking with persons.
[2] group discussion will improve your knowledge base.
[3] group discussion will feel you confident while appearing for the interview etc etc...

Hence prepare a group with your freind circle and select different topics... all of them might not be relevant.. but do discussions on those topics....argue with your friend...

Kindly note you have to be understand for topics you discussed...
    Good luck.

    Hello,

On third semester onwards you need to prepare for your group discussion. You
should talk to your friends and set up a group and start practising short extempore
within your group. This will help develop english presentation skills, voice modulation
and enhance your english speaking power. You can also take professional help. There
are many institutes in India where you can take a short tem course on coversational
english. This will also help you a great deal. There is ample time in your hand so you
don't need to worry too much.

    Bye,
