What should be done with an employee, who instead of concentrating on his project, is helping the members of other group?

I am the manager of a private firm. It has come to my notice that one of our employees, instead of concentration on his own project, is helping the members of the other group. It is good to help others but his performance is going down day by day. What should be done with such an employee?

    Dear Aspirant,

It shows his over confidence on you & himself. He is not all bothering for himself. In order to control him,fix him some official target with time to complete. Then he may feel pressure to complete it & consequently he will give attention to complete his task & assignment. If he fails, issue him a memo to submit his explanation within 3 days after receipt of the memo failing which action should be initiated against him. With regard to action, you may issue a warning letter,or stop his increment of salary for time being.

If you follow the above steps, hope that there will be improvement in his activity & will concentrate on his works.

    Thanks & good luck.

    Hello Friend,

Well, helping office colleagues is always welcomed but that does not mean one has to neglect his own work. You have to talk the employee and tell him that you appreciate his selfless help to his colleagues but he should not neglect his own work as it will jeopardise his career. I do hope this advice will help him to realize his mistake but if he continues to provide help and support to other colleagues then you have to give him additional responsibilities so that he finds no time to help others at work. This will do the trick. But in the long run you should consider issuing show cause notice to him if the same situation prevails.

    Bye
