What to do when one of your team members is never completing his work on time?

I am working in a software company. I am the team leader of one of the groups consisting of 10 members. One of my team members never completes his work on time and never listens to me whenever I give him any good advice. This is also not good for the team as a whole. What should be done in such a situation?

    Dear Friend,

Congratulations to you for being the team leader of your project. As a team leader it is your responsibility to manage and guide all your team members.

As one of your team member is not doing his work properly which is not only bad for you and your project but it may spoil his career as well.

Better way is to talk to that guy in detail, and try to know the reasons behind his poor work quality. If you know the reasons well, it will be easier to deal with. Tell him that if he remains like this he will not achieve anything in his career.

If he is ready to improve then give him few weeks time but closely monitor him without being noticed.

If still he doesn't improve then talk to your management and request them to replace that member of your team with anyone else. Be ready to explain the reason behind this to your management.

    All the best.
    Thank you.

    Dear Aspirant,

Congratulations for being a team leader of 10 members.See all the employees are not alike. Some are very serious & obedience for works where as others are more talkative & less interested in works. We have to manage all.But all the employees should have interest to complete their assignments in time.In order to watch the activities, you should hand over them a note book & get receipt for it.Ask them the details of work done in a particular day.The employee who is not maintaining it will be found faulty & accordingly you can take action against the concerned employee.

Now you have two options, one is to give note book to all the employees & watch their activities, secondly, you can recommend for transfer of the concerned employee to some where who is not interested in work.To my opinion, you should apply the first option & see the result. In case of his failure in this regard, you can apply second option with evidence for immediate action by the superior or management.

    Thanks & good luck.

    Hi,

As a team leader it is your duty to get the work done by your team members.
You should be polite but strict in regard to work.
Your team member should complete his work on time because this may affect the productivity of your team.
You must explain him that if he does not do his work then it is not good for the team but the result may be worse for him.
He can be kicked out of the team if denies to obey you.

You can also talk about him to your boss, that he is not completing his work and others are suffering due to him.
Your boss will surely explain him and teach him his duties.
When one of the member is not behaving properly, then every one else should take in charge on him.
Every one should tell him that he should do his work and others cannot pay for his laziness.

Meanwhile, you must motivate him to do his work.
Explain him the benefits of behaving good and being regular in his work.
If he behaves the same, then team leader may give a such report to the management that he may never get salary hike or promotion.
But, if he does well and outstanding work then , then his future may be bright.

    Good luck

As you know that such things are not good in a team, you must deal this matter with care. These things can bring indiscipline in the team which can effect the proper working of the team and thus ultimately effect your target. You should be strict in this matter and must talk to him. Warn him that either he work and listen to you or you will do his complain to the boss. See in such things you have to be strict and must show that you will never tolerate such indiscipline. Until and unless you will show strictness the team members will not care. You will have to show them that you are there leader and they will have to follow your instructions.

In a private company, things cannot go on like this. If it is his habit not to finish work on time, then this cannot be tolerated for long. Since he is not bothered about the work , not even interested in taking your advice, then how long will you be tolerating his nonsense ? As the team leader you are responsible for the working of every member of your team. Every time he fails to complete his work on time means you those many times are answerable for his failure! I think it is high time to give him warning! A strong warning may make him realise his shortcomings. If it still doesnot work, then complain about him to the higher authorities that continuing with him a members is becoming really difficult for you!

If he is not listening to you as you are a team leader then it will be better for you to take that man away from your team because one dirty apply makes all the apple dirty, if you keep him in your team then your team will suffer, and if you throw him out then your team will be good but one member will be out so what you want to choose your team or that stupid man who never listen to anybody. If he is not listening to you then call him ans ask him to explain his problem if he give you the points that is acceptable then try to improve from your side , but if he is saying useless things to you then the first option i have already explained you. Just screw him out of the company by reporting him to the boss because you are unable to handle that person.

    Hi,

At times, there are a couple of members in the team who fail to obey their leaders/supervisors and try to make rules on their own. Do not worry, rather first send a meeting invite to all the team members and discuss this issue in a general meeting. At times, members realize their areas of improvements and check themselves. Still, if the person concerned does not improve then you need to talk to him in person in a meeting room to make him understand that his casual attitude might result in his fall of career growth and hamper his rankings in future. Yet, if the team member behaves similarly and shows no sign of improvement, the I would suggest you to take this matter and discuss his attitude with your reporting manager and the Human Resource as well.

    Thanks,
    Ritz

    Hello Aspirant,

It is quite common to face such problems when you are dealing more than one persons in life because the man differs in nature in aspects of their work interest ,food habits etc.

You need not worry for such thing.Call the concerned employee & ask him as why he does not have interest in work. What does he want? What does he has problem with him?Depending upon the answers from him,you can find solutions to him.

Also you may issue all members a note book & instruct them to write the work done in a particular day.Inspect those note books regularly & instruct where ever requires. This practice will help others to be prompt in works.

Depending upon the performance, you can recommend for further action against the concerned employee to the senior officer.

Hope the employee will take interest in works because he might have developed fear of you.

    Good luck.

When your team leader you have all the power and right to command work from them.. When you have given a task to your team member its his responsibility and duty to complete his work and report to you.. You should also command for the work to be done.. But you have mentioned that he is not at all listening to you this is very bad and he doesn't have respect to a head of team this is ugly and irresponsible behavior and as team leader you should never expect this from member when he is of no use then you should always take concrete step take immediate action if you don't whole team will not take you serious you will loose your command over team.. So you should personally meet the boss of the company you should report this behavior of person who has no respect towards work and team its better you move out of team

Re: What to do when one of your team members is never completing his work on time?

You are the team leader so this is your duty that you show your leadership quality in the company because you have got posted as a leader because of your strength and skills of leadership and management and if you will not perform your duty well according to the higher authorities then how will you get other responsibilities and hikes in your job so this is the only time when you can prove that you are the best leader in the company and may handle easily problem easily of the team and problems must come at this stage because if you will not test your leadership ability then no one can say that you are the leader of a team consist 10 members in the company so this is the golden opportunity for you to manage the team easily

First of all see that if you are unable to control over that member then remember your power which are given by the higher authorities of the company that you can scold any member if he/she does not work according to you and you may also complain him to higher officers so you need to keep all these things in your mind

Once you should call him into your cabin personally and do not allow any other member with him then you should talk to him as a friend being free from your all works then you should ask that dear friend we are friends in the team and do not take me as leader of the team because sometimes this type of thinking may make your frustrated in the work and tell me what problem you are facing while working and if there is any personal problem then you can share with me without any hesitation because I have seen you working good in company from past years and now I am not looking that hard working person in the company because I know that there is something wrong in your life that is why you are disturbed from your work and not performing well in the company and unable to complete your all works on time why.

Then he will tell you his problem and you should allow him to speak against you means say to him that if you want to speak anything about me or wants to abuse me then you are independent because may be that I am the cause of your bad performance in the company so he will tell you everything and despite allowing him to speak freely he do not tell you anything then you can force him to mention the cause then also if he does not tell you anything then you may scold him because you have the right that if any member do not work well then first you suggest the right way to work and commit the same mistake again then you can scold him over that work so this may also be a right solution

If do not understand after using each weapon then you may go to your manager and complain him to your manager that he is not working good and completing no work on time then your manager will see him and when manager will give you choice between job and performance then he will choose right performance and good for the company and will come on the line

    All the best

Re: What to do when one of your team members is never completing his work on time?

    Hello,

Some team members are not responsible or regular. But you must not worry about it. They will have to suffer due to such reasons.

As a team leader you must give him last warning. Tell him if from then onwards he will not be regular in his work , then you will report it to your boss. Your boss will surely handle him. And with this the member will also start working regularly.

He should respect you and obey you. He is not behaving properly among the team. If he remains irregular then it could affect the working of whole team. The project will not be completed on time and many difficulties may arrive.

The team members will suffer due to his pending work. It is very important that he starts doing his work regularly.

If he continues to behave same even after last warning then you must report it to your boss or manager. This could even lead to his removal from the company if he does not improve. But you must take this step as soon as possible.

You should also be strict i this matters. Then he will understand.

    All the best
