Is there mandatory technical tests conducted in IT firms every year?

I cleared my training after three levels of test. I was happy that i cleared the training else i would be chucked out. But i heard like there is test to be taken for each employee every year that is mandatory and that determines a employee appraisal. I am really afraid and unhappy about this. Is this true. If so is there any way to get rid of these tests. Can someone provide answers for this.

if the management feels in making the employees the best then it is mandatory for them to have technical tests but some companies donot prefer these instead they make performance appraisal that is the persons ability in completion of project work and as team member and results of outcome is taken into consideration...
