    Temporary night shift to fill in for absent colleague pose permanent problem

    I am sub editor in a newspaper where I work in the national edition till evening hours. The final edition goes for printing after midnight. Initially, I was asked to come for the night shift as it was a temporary arrangement to fill in the place for an ailing colleague. Now, the colleague has resumed back but she refuses to attend her original shift. This is bothering as I am working here for the last one year while she is here for last 3 years. What should I do to get this problem fixed subtly as I do not want to create chaos with management?

    Your problem needs to be addressed as soon as possible.You can talk to your colleague and make it clear to her that you have been facing problem to work for night shift.She cannot refuse to work in the shift which is assigned to her.You have managed temporarily but it is not your duty to carry it forward.She has to do it.ASk her to talk to higher authority to sort out her own problem.In case she doesnt,then you yourself talk to your higher officials and convey them about your inconvenience.Your colleague is simply taking advantage of you your goodness!

    When you want your relief from the night shift,you must get medical certificate in order to take rest during night hrs.If you don't do any thing the management will make you to continue the night shift duty ever which will hamper your health.As per factory act the employee can be put in rotation weekly in duty for 8 hrs where 24 hrs work goes on.One week for 6AM to 2PM,next for 2.00PM to 10 PM & then from 10PM to 6 AM.

    The employees are supposed to attend duty in the above manner in a manufacturing unit or in a factory.So submit a representation with a medical certificate with a recommendation to be harmful in cintinuing the night duty regularly to the higher authority to consider the fact.

    Hope you will get relief from your continuous night duty with the above suggesation.

    Dear friend I understand your problem as the management utilised you at the urgent need of hours you gave proxy to the the place of ailing colleague indeed this is your utmost obediency to the office management.Now the ailing colleague have returned to the office.Ok now the problem here is that ailing employee is denying to undertake his duty as before i.e in original night shift.Now as per me you must not tolerate this situation normally you have responded at the the time of urgent need of hour but it is not right to exploit you by the management and ailing colleague.

    You place your application to your beloved management to do right action about your replacement to your earlier place.As a matter of correct decision management must do to your favour.If the ailing employee have any objection to join at his original post he should apply to management showing appropriate reason later,but first he must release the employee who served at his place during the ailing period.

    You are evidently in a difficult situation and your act of good will has cost you. To avoid this situation and at the same time avoid any chaos with the management you have the option of talking with your colleague directly. You should tell her that you had replaced her at the time when she was ailing and you did that so that work goes on smoothly. You should stress on the fact that you took up her position when she wasn't there so as to make up for her absence. It was an act of good will from her side because you did not want the organization to feel her absence and at the same time you wanted to help. Incase you mention all this to her then I believe she should be grateful to you for taking up her post when she wasn't there and revert to her duty.

    Incase your colleague doesn't agree then you should talk to management in a very polite way mentioning that you took up the job in order to be of some help in the time of need and now you want your colleague to revert to her duty. You should tell them that it isn't possible for you to handle both working till late evening and then coming for the night shift as well. It also decreases your efficiency. I think these reasons should be enough for your management to understand your situation and take a fair decision.

    The last resort that you have is to quit your job if it is highly impossible for you bear the work load. It is advised to take up such a job which makes you get up in the morning with a desire in mind to go to work. I am sure that your colleague will acknowledge your act and be grateful to you.     I can understand why you dont want to create any chaos with your management and solve this problem subtly. Of you dont want your job to come in any danger. But you should not let your colleague take undue advantage of you just because he is more experienced than you. Rather he should be thanful to you that you helped fill his vacancy during his ailing period and not put the whole responsibility of the night shifts on your shoulders.

    You should go and talk to him if you dont want to take this matter to the management. Tell him that you helped him by temporarily doing the night shift for him during his ailing period but now as he is well, he should resume the night shift from now onwards and not put the whole responsibility of the night shifts on your shoulder. Tell him that as a good colleague and a good human being you helped him earlier and now he must take up his wn responsibility and thus relieve you.

    I am sure he will realise that what he is doing is wrong and relieve you of the night shifts. But if he is adamant and doesnt accept his mistake, i think you should certainly complain about him to the management telling them the whole story . I am sure they will punish him for his irresponsible behaviour.

    This is the general problem faced by many employees, I recommend you to please talk to your senior management regarding this issue and ask for your regular shift timings.As you told you do not want to create any chaos with management, so I suggest you to please write a request application to your senior. If they they feel your request is right, then you will shifted back to your shift timings, else you have to work in night shifts. I recommend you, if your request will not be listened by the management, then you can work in night shifts for 2-3 months and then you also have the option to demand your timings with suitable reason, which have to be listened by the management.

    first you want to ask your colleague to your problem make it clear to her and you have facing problem for working in night shifts..

    she cannot refuse to work in the shift which is assigned to her..if they feel your request is right then you will shifted back to your shifting timings only
