Should present/past performance be judged for promotion?

I am the manager of a private software company. Recently a notice from the higher authority has come that the company will provide promotion to nine members. They have asked me to recommend those nine names. Which performance should be judged for promotion-present or past performance?

The higher authority has shouldered you with a great responsibility to choose members for promotion. You should remember that the outcome of your decision will be reflected in the working and functioning of your company. It will also reflect in the working environment of the company.

In order to choose members for promotion, you should judge members with the past as well as present performances.Consistency is a key point in professional world for one to achieve success,be it an individual or a firm or an industry. There is no substitute of consistently. So employees with consistent good performances as well as good working culture background should be given preference.

However, you should not miss out the Senior employees who are serving the company for a long time and are expecting promotion. It is important for your company to retain the senior employees for their experience so promotion will be the biggest weapon in order to achieve this. You should be fair in choosing the members and it should not have tinge of partiality.Otherwise this can have adverse effect in the relationship among the employees and disturb the working environment.

Hence your list should contain maximum names of senior consistent employees providing good performances and support to the company. One or two person can be listed who has been outstanding in the recent times or who played a major role in getting a big success for the company.

    Hello,

Firstly you have to short list the names of candidates who are hard working. Then you have to tally their present and past performances (this is very essential).Keep it in mind that it is your responsibility to pick up those deserving candidates who really deserve to get a promotion.Once you tally their performances you will find that some of them will reflect consistency in their performance level.I will suggest you to choose these members or employees.Dont be biased towards anybody.Be rational and choose them on the basis of their merit.

Re: Should present/past performance be judged for promotion?

    Hi friend

According to me the present performance of an employee, from the past 1 year, should be the criteria for promotion as that will definitely give you an idea that how the employee is going to perform in the future and in this way only the deserving employees will get the promotion. so you should definitely judge the performance of the past 1 year for recommending the names of those who deserve promotion according to you.

If an employee has been performing well in the past but has somehow gone down in his performance from the past 1 year, then you can't certainly tell where he will be heading when he gets a promotion. As he has not been able to improve his performance from the past 1 year , so he might not be able to do justice with his post when he gets the promotion as he hasn't shown his calibre in the recent past.

On the other hand the employee who was performing not that well in the past but has drastically shown improvement from the past 1 year is more likely the candidate for promotion as he has shown that he can overcome his shortcomings and thus deal with any kind of hard circumstances in life. He certainly has shown his calibre and the zeal to do better in the recent past and in my opinion is a better choice for getting the promotion.

But of course there maybe some of the candidates who have been performing well since the beginnning till date without any decline in their performance and they surely are the best contenders for getting the promotions at this time. So friend I think you should give promotions based on the employee's performance in the recent past and thus should give the promotions to only those 9 employees who deserve them the most without any bias whatsever.

I hope you get my point and thus will make the right choice. I hope justice is done to all. Good luck and Thanks

    Dear Aspirant,

As you may be knowing that promotion means giving higher post with high salary. It means the candidates to be promoted will have to bear more responsibilities than now.So promotion is considered & sanctioned on the basis of the past & present performance of the employees. In order to consider for promotion, there is a provision of annual job appraisal.

The employees who have good character, knowledge & behaviour are considered & sanctioned promotion to higher post.So you must see to it for recommending the names of the employees for promotion.Their past job appraisal reports must be referred to consider for their eligibility.

    Thanks & good luck.

    Hey!
First of all you should realize the gravity of the responsibilty that is on your shoulders. You need to make a very conscious decision. You need to get all your facts about all the employees right. You need to keep a track record of how the employees have behaved in stress situations. You need to analyze their past and present contributions to the organization. Every little detail has to be paid attention to. Your decision will affect the lives of 9 people.

As far as comparing the present or the past performances is concerned, I think equal weightage should be given to both the aspects. It is important for the employee to have a certain degree of consistency in his output. You need to check the progress graph of the employees. They should show a certain advancement in terms of efficiency. The targets that they have achieved also plays a major role. Another thing that plays an important role is the time frame that has been alloted to them.

You also need to go through the feedbacks that have been received by the clients for the different employees. The communication skills of the employee with the client is of utmost importance because clients are what make the organization rise. Appraisals also have a major role to play in this regard because that deals with the behaviour of the client with his colleagues and his boss.

The reason why both the present and past performances need to be considered together is that there should be a certain consistency that should be maintained by the employees. It is very important for the long term survival of the employee in the organization. There has to be a certain sense of stability in their work which can be gauged only from the number of years that the employee has invested in the organization. Sometimes certain employees work in the spur of the moment but there is no stability in their work. I hope that you will make a wise decision. All the best!

    Hello ,
The best employee would who has been consistent with his performance in the past as well in the present .

Past performance should definitly be considered when you are selecting as they have more experience and can handle
a difficult situation in hand .
Past performance shows that he has the ability to work but you should be careful to judge the employee still performs his
task in the company with same interests etc .

If someone who wasnt perfornming so well in the past years in the company but is presently showing good sue of his management
skills shows that he is hand-working and determinded to excell . He should definitly have your attention as he wll soon evolve
into one of the better employee you will work with as he gets more experience .

But PAST is PAST , if an employee is not able to deliver what is expected of him in the present , he is not worthy of
a upgradation on the basis of his past reputation .
I hope you will be able to pick the one who are best suitable.
    thank you !

As you'll be knowing that promotion means that giving higher post with high earnings. It means that the candidates to be promoted can got to bear additional responsibilities than currently. So promotion is taken into account & sanctioned on the premise of the past & gift performance of the staff. In order to think about for promotion, there is a provision of annual job appraisal.

The staff UN agency have smart character, knowledge & behavior are thought-about & sanctioned promotion to higher post.So you need to see thereto for recommending the names of the staff for promotion.Their past job appraisal reports should be noted contemplate for his or her eligibility.
First of all you ought to understand the gravity of the responsibility that's on your shoulders. you would like to create a awfully acutely aware call. you would like to urge all of your facts regarding all the staff right. you would like to stay a record of however the staff have behaved in stress things. you would like to research their past and gift contributions to the organization. each very little detail has got to be paid attention to. Your call can have an effect on the lives of nine folks.

As so much as comparison this or the past performances worries, i feel equal weight-age ought to be to each the aspects. it's vital for the worker to possess a definite degree of consistency in his output. you would like to envision the progress graph of the staff. they ought to show a definite advancement in terms of potency. The targets that they need achieved conjointly plays a serious role. Another issue that plays a vital role is that the time-frame that has been alloted to them.

You furthermore may ought to undergo the feedbacks that are received by the purchasers for the various staff. The communication skills of the worker with the shopper is of utmost importance as a result of purchasers ar what create the organization rise. Appraisals even have a serious role to play during this regard as a result of that deals with the behavior of the shopper along with his colleagues and his boss.

If Associate in Nursing worker has been acting well within the past however has somehow gone down in his performance from the past one year, then you cannot definitely tell wherever he are heading once he gets a promotion. As he has not been ready to improve his performance from the past one year , thus he won't be ready to do justice along with his post once he gets the promotion as he hasn't shown his calibre within the recent past.

On the opposite hand the worker UN agency was acting not that well within the past however has drastically shown improvement from the past one year is additional possible the willdidate for promotion as he has shown that he can overcome his shortcomings and therefore handle any quite exhausting circumstances in life. He definitely has shown his calibre and therefore the zeal to try and do higher within the recent past and in my opinion may be a more sensible choice for obtaining the promotion.

However after all there perhaps a number of the candidates UN agency are acting well since the start until date with none decline in their performance and that they certainly ar the most effective contenders for obtaining the promotions at now. thus friend i feel offer promotions supported the employee's performance within the recent past and therefore should offer the promotions to solely those nine staff UN agency merit them the foremost with none bias no matter.
