    Inspite of performance, promotion put on hold due to age factor

    I have been working with the same pharmaceutical company for the last 15 years. During the annual performance review meeting, a junior colleague whom I have trained took over the reins from me. It is frustrating to work in such an environment where promotions depend on age and looks. I was expecting a promotion as I have a proven track record. Top management hinted at my age and stated that young appealing team workers are USP of any company. Please suggest me a way to keep the issue sober yet I wish to convey my point.

    This is demerit of pvt companies they always see the company's interest never see the employees' condition and eligibility They are maker of internal law so a needy efficient employee may be the victim of getting due respect as well as promotion.If we compare with Govt. employee and PSU employee you will see the gulf of difference regarding norms and availability of opportunities.Senior employee always get's the supreme opportunity in Govt. sector.Here a new youth he has the future so he will get pre omotion but as senior and aged and more qualified then the youth they employer need not think that you are the one employee who helped the youth to enhance knowledge/skill/experience etc,Due to aged you will not nothing as you are youth so you are productive to me you get promotion.

    Such ir-regularities should be removed such norms hart the employee it is not good of course such ir-regularities is only possible in pvt company which is not follow company rules.

    I feel absolutely disappointed with the top management of your company which views promotions on basis such as age and looks and not performance and dedication towards work. I think you should definitely air your views to the top management. An email is the best way to keep things sober yet deliver your point. You should send an email to the top officials as soon as possible talking about how you deserved the promotion more than the other colleague of yours. You should highlight your appraisals as well as your work that has brought benefits to the company. You should also mention in the mail that you are not against anyone else getting a promotion but what has hurt you is the fact that the only plus point that the person getting the promotion had is age. You should mention that your loyalty and hardwork towards your company is what makes you a torchbearer in the run for a promotion.
    Incase after an email you do not receive a reply then you should not hesitate and talk to the top management about it directly. Be prepared when you go there to talk to them. Stress on your contributions towards the company and make sure that you are very polite yet firm in putting across your point. If you do not see any scope of growth for yourself in this company even after putting in so much of hardwork then you should look for another job because I strongly feel that age should never be a bar for promotion in any company and one should be recognzied for his hardwork and not for superficial qualities.

    I think it is highly unjust of your company to not promote you just because of your age which makes you look less appealing than some junior employees who dont even have half the experience and dedication as you. Its ok if you want to be sober but i think you should withstand such prejudice and try to convey your point strongly to the management so as to make them understand that what they are doing is wrong.

    You should certainly get your deserved promotion and if you are denied the same just because of superficial factors like age and looks, i dont think that you need to continue working here in such an environment where you are not treated fairly. You should go and talk to your management and put in front of them your views regarding their behaviour and prejudice towards senior employees. You should straightforward tell them that in your opinion promotion should be based upon performance and track record of the employee and their hard work and dedication rather than on superficial factors like age and looks which is totally irrrational in your opinion. They should try to rise above such superficial things and try to implement proper rules during promoting the employees.

    I am sure this will make your management feel ashamed at themselves and hopefully they will change their policies. Hopefully this will teach them a good lesson. If not its better you resign to maintain your self respect and not bow down to their unjust policies.

I think your's management must understand that it's a pharmaceutical company where experience matters not an modelling company where age and looks are given prefrence. You must put your point strongly infront of the management and try to convinance them, so that they can understand and change their decision. If they stick with their decision, as per my suggestion you should find the new company as it's not possible to work in existing environment.
