    How to deal with the team member as a senior to the same team?

    We were 4 people joined to the company at the same time. We are in the same team. Because of my performance of 6 months they have made me the team leader of the same team. I have become senior of the same team. My teamís mates are not listening because of which I am getting scolding from my seniors. What should I do? How should I deal with my team member being a senior of the same team?

    Hi Aspirant,
    Your problem is very common in corporate sector, most of the person irritate this problem that their junior member
    are not listening properly because of the same age problem. but this is not right , then you
    should try to complain to HR manager for this problems because this problem solve only by Manager.

    Dear Aspirant,

    Congratulations for being selected for the team leader.Since all of you have joined & worked together.In this case you have to deal with your mates very politely.Take the views of others in any decision making.Don't try to impose your own decision to them.See what the majority says,try to do the same thing,but in the interest of the organisation & yourself.If any decision of your superior,you have to pass it to them,say the same thing to them & regarding implementation,discuss it with your mates.But you should not go against the organisation.If they are not all listening to you,you can report the matter to your superior.But before that you must inform your mates & see the result.

    You need to balance your professional and personal role. You can be always a good friend of them but in profession as you have got team lead role you need to possess more authoritativeness. Start assigning tasks to team members and make each one of them accountable. You have to show professional maturity here. Try to learn company process and observe how your seniors are managing team. Please create a plan for each of team members, set their goals and set the expectation and make it clear if they are not achieving they will not do well in the performance appraisals. Avoid loose talk or personal gossip with team members at work. Show your leadership quality as you have got a nice opportunity in your career so you have to prove yourself and take your role to next level.

    While you bring back the discipline in the team ensuring team members follow the process and able to meet deliverables, in between balance it with motivating your team with team building activities, get-together,sports etc.

    When few people join in a group in a process in any comapny, and do the process training etc and suddenly one of them becomes their boss, than it takes time for the other to accept the reality and work with their new boss.
    Its human nature and thats why they are not ready to accept you as boss.
    But that does not stop you from discharging your duties as Team Leader.

    First thing is that you need to be more proactive ,Firm and assertive in your behaviour while talking to your team members.
    You cant talk to them just like you were talking earlier.

    On the Operations floor , you should behave like a leader, your all actions are being watched by all your team members.
    Hold one to one meeting atleast each fortnightly and discuss performance of each staff with them individually
    Hold team meetings daily

    In all these activities, you need to show your leadership qualities.
    Also be firm and dont be afraid that your team mates are not listening, if you say something and they are not listening, you should stress to them that they have come here to work and they have to work as per the rules of the company and you as process lead is making sure that rules are being followed.

    If someone regularly not listening to you and also not working as per the guidelines of the process, give him a warning letter after consultation of your manager

    Do these things and slowly they will accept your as their boss.

    Hi i think you should talk to your team members directly about this situation. Its very sad that your team members are behaving like this and you have to bear the brunt of their behaviour.

    You should give them a lesson on team spirit and tell them that a team should work together to achieve good results. Tell them as a team leader it is your duty to guide them in the right direction and they should listen to you. If you work in team spirit then only the company will be happy with you and may even increase your salaries.

    I think they will listen to you. If they are still adamant and behave badly complain about them to the higher authorities.
