Do I need to have PhD to become the head of the particular department in a college after 10 years experience in the same college as a lecturer?

I have completed my M.Tech and doing lecturing in the same college where I studied. I have 10 years’ experience. One of our senior has become Head of chemistry department. He has completed PhD and has 20 years’ experience in lecturing. Do we need to have PhD to become head of department in college?

Cool Re: Do I need to have PhD to become the head of the particular department in a college after 10 years experience in the same college as a lecturer?

Somewhat like that, because the head of department is required to handle all the queries related to the subject which cannot be answered by other lecturers of the same department.
But it differs from college to college, in some institutions even without a degree like Phd a lecture can become the head of department according to seniority wise or capability and in some institutions a Phd degree is a pre requisit. What is more important is the experience and ability of the person and the degree is not a basic necessity. If the authority of the institution finds you capable they will appoint you as the head of department for your subject.
Having a Phd degree is good since it will equip you with more teachable ideas and the students will benefit through it, here the benefit of the students should be your main priority and don't let that head of department thing come in between you and the students.

    dear friend,
Get your teaching sorted out - if you are confident in your teaching then you will be able to support your department through pedagogy and they'll feel happy getting feedback from you in lesson observations. You will have less time for your teaching as a HoD so having plenty resources and a good idea about the curriculum and the key points and progression through the curriculum. So that even you can become the head of the department.
    WISH YOU SUCCESS

    hello friends....

it differs from college to college rules..

if PhD is there that could be more advantage to you fir the head of department in your college

most of the colleges prefer the higher educational peoples to the head of department so you have to PhD for getting Head of department

but in some colleges based on the experience they will provide the head of the particular department

    all the best
