Is it compulsory to pay the medical bills if any employee becomes sick in office?

I own a private product company. Recently one of my employees got sick during the office hours in the office while working. As a result,we admitted him quickly to the nearby hospital. The doctors said he would take time to recover. So,is it compulsory to pay his medical fees from the company's account?

    Hi aspirant

I think this depends on the rules and policies of your company and according to them you can take this decision. But as a goodwill gesture, if nothing else, you should definitely pay the medical expenses of that employee from your company's account because I am sure it won't hurt you much. Now we come back to the rules and policies of your company. Now if your company provides the facility of medical reimbursement or medical allowance to its employees , then you should definitely pay the employee's medical bills from your company's account.

But in case if your company does not provide such a provision to its employees then you might not pay his bill, but in my opinion you should pay his bill as he got sick at your workplace and more than that, as a goodwill gesture , from your company's side. I am sure he will remember this noble gesture of yours throughout his life and this will be certainly of more value to you than mnoney. He will be even more sincere and loyal to your company than before.

I am sure you will understand my point and do as I say. Good luck

    Hi friend,

What i think is yes you need to pay the medical bills if the employee becomes sick in office.

Because as the employee is working for you and has fallen sick in the office, it is your minimum responsibility to take care of him.

If the employee has applied for sick leave and you didn't grant it then its your duty to take care of him.

But if he didn't ask for any sick leave and is suddenly fallen sick in the office then also it is your responsibility to take up the minimum medical charges that are applicable such as doctor's fees and medicine charges.

HOpe i have helped you in getting relevant information.

    All the best

    Thanking you...

    Hello Sir,
Yeah as he is a resource of your company and contributing towards your companies profit you company should take care of him in adverse condition.and almost all company covers employees medical reimbursement.here in this case you found that the employee got unconcious during company hours so he is not cheating or trying benefit of that facility else you had the right to scrutinize every thing.
in other companies they take some amount from employee salary and save it for medical expense of the person and reimburse when they claim for it so you can add that policy in your company and keep some amount from there salary every month such that you wont have to pay it from your own pocket.
    Thank You.

    Dear Aspirant,

It all depends upon the policy of the company.Generally if the employees are the members of ESI,the cost will be reimbursed by the ESI.Or if the company is paying medical allowance, then the cost of treatment is not payable by the company. So you must visit some other company to know about the policy being adopted for the employees. This way you can also adopt the same & favourable policies in your comapny.

It would be better to be connected with ESI in which the employer will have to contribute 4.75% & employees contribution is 1.75%.Total 6.5 % fund is managed by ESIcorporation which comes under ministry of labour & employement, govt. of India. The Act was passed in 1948 by GOI.

The employees get medical & cash benifit for their & family sake through large nos.of dispensaries & hospital. You can visit its office in your location to get details & for further action.

    Thanks & good luck.

    Ashok..

Hai,It is not compulsory that you should say his medical expenses if any rules are not framed in the law books of the company..If its framed then its compulsory to give the medical claims..Or else on the basis of sympathy you can pay it..
